Cousine Island is delighted to announce the successful introduction of the Seychelles White-eye after many years of hard work and intensive habitat rehabilitation. This small bird is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red Data List.

20 birds from the Conception Island population have been released and are being kept in a purpose built aviary on Cousine Island prior to being released into the wild. Difficult to follow due to the thick vegetation on the island and almost impossible to hear them calling through the cacophony of seabirds, the White-eye seem to be adapting well and are feeding on the berry bearing trees planted for them during the preparation months. Gary Ward of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in Jersey came to Cousine Island to assist with the translocation and post release monitoring of the birds. He has a wealth of experience in working with passerines and has been included in the translocation of the Mauritian Olive White-eye to the island of Ile aux Aigrette in Mauritius.

Five more birds from the Mahé population are expected to be introduced. The White-eye introduction is a joint project between Cousine Island, the Island Conservation Society (ICS) and The Ministry of Environment. The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) has assisted with the funding of this project.

Cousine Island is totally committed to conservation and offers guests a unique nature experience in comfort and luxury. Inhabited only by indigenous species, this private nature reserve is also a nesting haven for sea turtles as well as the variety of land and sea birds. Four spacious villas, each with views of Cousine’s sugar-white beach, incorporate all the comforts required for a luxurious, romantic and relaxing stay.
