Carbon neutral hotel - URBN Hotels Shanghai

URBN Hotels Shanghai and Climate Bridge have entered into an agreement to create China’s first carbon neutral hotel. Carbon neutrality is a way to offset or reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere by efforts such as increased energy efficiency, gas capture techniques to reduce harmful gases and generate electricity, and renewable power sources such as wind, solar, bio fuel, and hydro power.

URBN Hotels is the first carbon neutral hotel in Shanghai, as well as China as a whole. The total amount of energy the hotel consumes, including staff commutes, food and beverage delivery, and the energy used by each guest, will be tracked to calculate the carbon footprint. URBN will then purchase credits to neutralize its footprint by investing in “green” energy development and emission reduction projects in China. Hotel guests can also choose to purchase carbon credits from the program to offset their flights. All credits are verified and approved according to international standards. This voluntary action by URBN Hotels is significant considering China is the fastest growing emitter of greenhouse gases and is central to the success of the global response to climate change.

Located on Jiaozhou Road just north of Nanjing Road, the 26-room hotel was conceived by owners Scott Barrack and Jules Kwan from the desire to give visitors to Shanghai a unique urban experience and features innovative contemporary design with Chinese influences. Beyond being carbon neutral, URBN Hotels is also committed to developing and operating a green hotel. By rebuilding an existing structure, using 100% local and recycled material such as reclaimed hardwoods and old Shanghai bricks, and introducing eco-friendly solutions like passive solar shades, rain water retention basins, and water based AC systems, URBN hopes to set an example for other Chinese businesses and industries.

Climate Bridge is a UK and China based carbon wholesaler. Climate Bridge is determined to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to China’s environmental protection. Climate Bridge has a wide spectrum of projects, including renewable energy projects such as small hydro and wind farms; energy efficiency projects and waste gas recovery projects.

URBN Hotels Shanghai and Climate Bridge believe that all companies and individuals are crucial to the reduction of carbon emissions and the future of our planet.
